How to Write a Book: A No-Nonsense Guide for First-Time Writers in India

Every month, around 22,200 people in India type "how to write a book" into Google. Most of them never write one. Not because they can't, but because nobody tells them the boring truth: a book is just a lot of small writing sessions that didn't get skipped.

This guide is the boring truth, with a few jokes to keep you awake.

First, decide what kind of book you're writing

It sounds obvious. It isn't. Fiction and non-fiction are different jobs.

Here's my one strong opinion for this page: if this is your first book and you want people to actually pay for it, start with short non-fiction. A practical 30-page guide can be written in two to three weeks and sold as an ebook. A first novel can take a year and still need a publisher who replies to emails. Write the guide first. Learn how finishing feels. Then write the novel with that confidence.

If the short guide route sounds right, our step-by-step guide to writing an ebook goes deeper on that path.

Build the habit before you build the book

Books are not written in inspired weekends. They're written in unglamorous Tuesday evenings.

Outline before you write

An outline isn't a cage. It's a map so you don't drive around the same roundabout for three weeks.

For non-fiction:

  1. Write the result your reader will get, in one sentence.
  2. List the 6 to 10 steps that get them there. Each step becomes a chapter.
  3. Under each chapter, write 3 to 5 bullet points.

For fiction, try the simplest structure that exists: beginning (who wants what), middle (what stops them, getting worse), end (what they do about it and what it costs). Sholay works on this structure. So does almost every film your parents still watch on Sunday afternoons.

A ready-made structure helps a lot here. Our ebook template gives you one for non-fiction.

Write the ugly first draft

The first draft's only job is to exist. It's allowed to be clunky. It's allowed to repeat itself. Hemingway apparently said something rude about first drafts, and he was right, though I'll keep this page family-friendly.

Things that help:

Using AI without losing your voice

ChatGPT can help you brainstorm chapter titles, untangle a messy paragraph or suggest an example. It should not write your book. Readers can tell, reviewers can tell, and you'll know. Feed it your notes and your stories, then rewrite what it gives you in your own words.

Edit in three passes

  1. Big picture. Does each chapter earn its place? Is anything missing?
  2. Line by line. Shorter sentences. Cut words like "very", "really" and "actually". (Yes, I see the irony of using "actually" earlier. I'm keeping it. It's load-bearing.)
  3. Proofread. Read it aloud, or have your phone read it to you. Your ear catches what your eye skips.

Then hand it to one or two honest readers who match your audience. Ask where they got confused or bored.

Make it look like a real book

Readers judge books by their covers. It's unfair. It's also true. If you're self-publishing, spend real time on the cover: here's our guide to ebook cover design, including the sizes Amazon wants.

Then publish it

You've got three realistic routes in India: a traditional publisher (slow, selective), self-publishing services and Amazon Kindle (fast, you keep control), or selling the PDF yourself (fastest, you keep the most money). We cover all three in how to publish a book in India.

How long does it take to write a book?

For a short non-fiction guide with a daily habit: roughly two to four weeks for the draft and one to two weeks to edit and design. For a novel: plan for many months, and be pleasantly surprised if it's fewer.

One last thing

Nobody is waiting for your book to be perfect. They're waiting for it to exist. Write 400 words today. Tomorrow, write 400 more. In a month you'll have something most of those 22,200 monthly searchers never will: a finished book. And possibly a slightly sore wrist.
