How to Sell a PDF Online in India (and Get Paid by UPI)

Selling a PDF online in India takes four things: a PDF worth paying for, a page that explains it, a UPI checkout, and a way to hand over the file after payment. That's it. No warehouse, no courier, no "out for delivery" anxiety.

Here's how to set each one up without paying for things you don't need.

What kind of PDFs actually sell?

People don't pay for information. Google is free. They pay for a shortcut to a result.

PDFs that sell well in India:

If you're starting from zero, our guide on how to write an ebook shows how to go from idea to finished PDF in about two weeks, and the ebook template gives you a structure to fill in.

How much should you charge?

Type Typical starting range
Checklist or short guide (10 to 25 pages) ₹49 to ₹99
Full step-by-step guide (25 to 60 pages) ₹99 to ₹299
Guide plus templates and bonuses ₹299 to ₹999

₹99 is a sweet spot in India. It's an impulse price: less than a pizza, paid by UPI in ten seconds, no "let me ask at home first". Start there, collect honest reviews, raise it later.

Step 1: Choose how people will pay

For Indian buyers, UPI is non-negotiable. You have three sensible options:

  1. A payment gateway like Razorpay on your own site. Lowest fees (standard rate around 2% plus GST on the fee), money settles to your bank usually in two working days.
  2. A creator platform (Instamojo, Superprofile, Cosmofeed and friends). Easier, file delivery included, higher fees.
  3. Amazon Kindle, if your PDF can become a proper ebook.

We compare all of them in where to sell ebooks online.

A quick warning: don't use "send money to my UPI ID and WhatsApp me the screenshot" as your checkout. It works for three sales. Then you're checking screenshots at 1 AM, someone sends a fake one, and you start questioning your life choices.

Step 2: Make the five pages a payment gateway checks

Razorpay and similar gateways review your website before activating payments. Missing pages are the number one reason for rejection. You need:

ChatGPT can draft these in minutes. Then read every line and make sure it matches what you actually do. A policy that says "we refund anything, any time" when you don't is worse than no policy.

Step 3: Deliver the PDF safely

Ranked from simplest to most professional:

  1. Thank-you page link: after payment the buyer sees a download link (for example a Google Drive link). Simple, but the link can be shared.
  2. Email it yourself: each payment shows the buyer's email in your dashboard. Fine for the first few sales a day.
  3. Your own secure download: your site checks the payment with the gateway and creates a private, expiring download link for that buyer. This is how our own ebook store works: the PDF sits outside the public website, and each buyer gets a personal link that works for 30 days.

Step 4: Write a page that sells

Your sales page needs, in this order:

  1. A headline that names the result ("Plan a week of hostel meals for ₹1,500")
  2. The problem, in the buyer's own words
  3. What's inside: chapters and what each one gives them
  4. Who it's for, and who it's not for
  5. A look inside: two or three real pages
  6. Price, and one big "Buy" button
  7. FAQ: payment, delivery, refunds

No fake countdown timers. No invented reviews. Indian buyers have seen every trick, and a single fake review costs you more trust than ten honest ones earn.

Step 5: Get your first ten buyers

The platform doesn't bring buyers. You do. Things that work:

The honest bit

Some PDFs sell a few copies. Some turn into a steady side income. Nobody can promise you which yours will be, and anyone who does is probably selling a course about it. What's in your control: a narrow topic, a genuinely useful PDF, a ten-second UPI checkout, and showing up every day. That's a better plan than most businesses start with. And far fewer meetings.
